Emotional Intelligence – Part two.
Psychology professor W Gerrod Parrott agrees with Paul Eckman’s theory that there are 6 basic emotions:
Professor Robert Plutchik says 8 – 4 emotions being the polar opposite:
Basic emotion Basic Opposite
Wheel of emotions – different emotions can blend into one another and create new emotions.
Strategies to begin to managing your emotions:
The emphasis on directing and influencing thoughts, feelings and behaviour is the key. It takes a lot of energy to keep feelings suppressed. When you try and control an emotion – you block the important message the emotion is trying to convey.
Regularly blocking or suppressing emotions keeps you apart from others. You can find it difficult to develop relationships and communicate effectively.
Take responsibility for your emotions and actions!
You have created your own emotions. You can take responsibility for your own emotions. Your emotions belong to you, they are yours to manage, to influence and direct.
- Feeling safe and secure
- Feeling a sense of control and being able to make your own choices
- A sense of purpose; opportunites and the ability to achieve
- A sense of belonging:
If you can force the rational thinking part of your brain to work, slow everything down so you can access the rational thinking part of your brain, change the course of your emotion.
Intense emotions blind us to the future and con us that now is ‘all’ that matters. No matter what the emotion, there is always more than one way to respond:
- Remove yourself
- Do Something
- Don’t do anything
- Talk to someone about how your feeling; it can give you a different perspective.
- No-one can read your mind – ever, It is really important to let someone know how your feeling.
- Try not to suppress your emotions and deal with them as they come
- Spend some time alone and discover what it is your actually thinking and feeling
- Once you know why it is, you can then move on
Communication of the Body
It is important to maintain the body, when your body is tense you are feeling tense. Did you know massages can assist with breaking those vicious body cycles? Is your body stressed? Do you suffer from headaches or TMJ syndrome (clenching or grinding of the teeth)? These aches and pains could be coming from another area of stress built up in the body, by addressing the source of pain it can reactively stop the tension or reduce or eliminate secondary stresses.
The body stores blockages and you can have tight muscles from holding in emotions, mental stresses as well as physical stresses. Remedial massages can release those trigger points we call ‘knots’, we incorporate stretches and elongate muscles, while breaking down those adhesions. It can also help alleviate pain, eliminate toxins and oxygenate the cells. Our highly trained professional therapists focus on those areas increasing the blood flow to the muscle tissues and release the tension. In some cases, you can have emotional releases such as laughter, tears or anger, after you feel so much better.
Remedial Massages unblock emotions and can assist with positive thought patterns. When you relax and destress through massage treatments, your rational thinking and clarity have a chance, your alertness increases for problem solving. Sometimes emotional releases can occur when your body shifts.
Often the importance of relaxation is underestimated. Having massages is a greater state of calm and allows you to gather your thoughts and be in touch with your emotional well-being, this is super important these days with everybody working around the clock and our busy lifestyles. We need to make sure we are 100 percent for ourselves and for everybody else. Regular massages reduce anxiety, and it encourages the release of endorphins, which make us feel good!
It also decreases the stress hormones such as norepinephrine, adrenaline and cortisol which can block lovely nourishing nutrients and vitamins to our bodies. That is another conversation, for another day with a Naturopath! Massage is great for your health, your physical and mental health.
