The benefits of Remedial Massage in Body Building or Training
Muscles need recovery from damage or trauma and growth for bodybuilding. According to a recent study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research examined whether or not massage can increase post-workout strength and improve body awareness. They found massage speeds up your recovery time by increasing muscle tissue permeability and opening micro-circulation.
Did you know when you get a deep muscle massage, your muscles are able to rid themselves of lactic acid? During a deep muscle massage, the pores of your tissue membranes open up, pushing out wastes and allowing nutrients to enter the muscle. It would help you to relieves fatigue and reduce the healing time of injuries.
Increase Muscle Tone and Flexibility
Massage improves blood circulation that benefit your muscle tone. Damaged or tight muscle tissues do not hold blood well and diminish your muscle tone. Your massage therapist may use a pumping technique or light drain strokes to move fluid through blood vessels and lymph nodes toward the heart. This improves muscle tone by helping damaged and tight tissues get nutrients required for growth and repair.
Did you know you should always stretch after your weights lifting and never beforehand? You need to keep tight before power lifting or you can cause an injury. Getting on the rower, bike or quick 5 minute run to warm up is recommended beforehand. And remember to stretch your muscles after exercise to keep the flexibility and lengthen. The end result is often reduced tension, a relief of pressure from sore areas, and increase the flexibility and ROM (range of motion) giving you better gains as well.
Receiving a massage before a bodybuilding competition can improve your performance by enhancing your mental state, and increase mental alertness and clarity. A massage can boost your level of confidence and diminish any accumulated stress that developed as a result of your bodybuilding training. Having massage after exercise not only can relive the fatigue of body, but also relax you. Our remedial therapists at Alternative Body Works know how much pressure to apply and what type of massage is required.
When should I have massage? Before or after exercise?
There are different benefits for pre-event or post-event massage which also have different massage techniques guidelines. For pre-event massage, the goals are increasing tissue elasticity and circulation, restoring flexibility, improving performance, and applying pre-warm up. So therapists would consider to energize your body by energetic technique.
For post-event massage, the goals are for faster muscle recovery from micro damage, relieving fatigues and aiding rejuvenation. In this way, therapists would concentrate on moving fluid out of tissue. Skilled massage therapists can provide suitable treatment for you, identify and treat muscle tightness as well as trigger points and scar tissues that might increase your risk of injury. Whether it be before or after you can reduce or prevent injuries while bodybuilding / training by getting a regular massage.
We would recommend after receiving a deep tissue massage that you have a rest day (24 hours) before training again. Take the time to let your body heal or you can do damage while your muscles are vulnerable. This is the smartest option. But if you must train do the opposite to what you had a deep tissue massage on – a leg day or upper body day. Remember, if you did have you’re back massaged and what to do a leg day, do not do weighted squats because you’re still working your back!
