Believe it or not the men have it right. For years women have been taught to act like ladies and cross their legs and take these little cute short breathes. Well I am here to tell you the men are right and we need to start sitting like a man!
Did you know by crossing your legs you are actually putting your hips out? One hip shortens and tightens and the other lengthens over, giving you a postural imbalance. The correct way to sit is all the way back in the seat, with your legs and cheeks evenly balanced on both sides and feet flat on the floor. This will allow your back to instantly straighten and evenly distribute the weight.
From this, ensure your back and shoulders are also straight. Then begin to take big full breathes using all your abdominal muscles, expanding your ribs and pushing out your belly button. Not only is this the correct way intended to breathe but this is also a great relaxing technique if you become overwhelmed from tensing your muscles and leaning forward for hours.
The correct way to sit at a desk is to have your back straight and your arms relaxed, not slouching or forcefully forward. Your ears on your head should be aligned with your shoulders! How many of us do not do this right? This leads me to suggest maybe take those breaks every hour to reset at the desk to realign and take the pressure off that forward head and forming kyphosis. If we can also mention, maybe have your head back on the head rest when driving too, not leaning forward over the steering wheel or leaning to one side.
